Marthena Carrington Obituary

Marthena Carrington Marthena Carrington was born in Brooklyn New York, to the late Harold Smalls, and Louise McCrae Smalls out of that union 12 children were born Eli, Louise, Whilemina, Waheeda, Regina, Phil, Harold, Mary, Karu, Marthena, Barbara, and Chester. and all are deceased now except 2 including her she was the 9th child.

She later met and married her now deceased husband Philip Allen (Bobby) Carrington out of that union 3 children were born Philip Justice Carrington Jr., Willona Lana Carrington, Stuart Allen Carrington, unfortunately, Justice was snatched from us tragically in 1991 and is also now deceased. Which she never truly recovered from that heartbreak! But nevertheless, she kept pushing! And doing what she had to do to keep her head afloat.

Marthena was educated in the New York City Public School and attended PS 150, JHS 166 - George Gershwin, earned nursing certificate from Clara Barton HS, Attended New York university and Hunter College and ultimately Received an Associate Degree and an Arts Scholarship to university of Maine where she also received a Bachelor’s Degree from NYU.

She Worked for Sesame street as their personal artist to do their signs, assist with designs and puppets... etc.  Marthena did her nursing training in Kings County.  She also worked as a Crew Chief for YSA: Youth Service Agency.  Marthena also worked at White castles for a season when times get tough! She refused to take handouts so she swallowed her pride and got to her bag to make sure her family was straight!

This is where her children get their Hustlers ambition!  Marthena also worked for Haitian American Day care center as a Director for several years...Women’s Survival Space as a counselor and Manager as well as worked at BRC with her late great cousin Jocko.  She was a Director of several community centers such as Unity Plaza, Glenmore Plaza, Bushwick, Weeksville, and retired at Langston Hughes community center all of NYC Housing Authority and last but definitely not the least she was the Owner of Kirijust creations ... which she got that name from her first born late son “Justice “and her first grandchild Kiriona . Marthena took pride in explaining the history behind her business and how it all started. where she handmade several dolls, quilts, and sewed clothing. She also did decor for several baby showers and parties, and took care of all your party needs down to party favors and the pins she did it all by hand!

Her motto was why pay for something I can make??? And she did just that! Hands down Marthena was Multi talented! in fact that’s a understatement! When she touched anything, magic happened literally!!!

She had a Heart made of gold! Witty, she always put others before her which it can be a gift & a curse because so many people don’t appreciate you but it’s better to give than receive and she took pleasure in doing that ... She enjoyed seeing people HAPPY! And had a special way with words... trust this, she knew how to put choice words together... LOL, Sense of humor out of this world! In fact, whenever u asked her what she wanted from the store or asked her what she needed she would always say a “Bag of money, with an extra bag of money!

She leaves to mourn her daughter Willona (Lana) Carrington, her son Stuart Allen Carrington , her 11 Grandchildren Kiriona (Kiki) Carrington, Darius (Jeep ) Carrington, Essence (Moneybag Etay) Carrington , Styles Carrington, Rashawn (B.B.) Griffin, Rashadeen (Deen Deen) Griffin, Royalty (grandma princess) Griffin , her God son Micheal Gibson aka JoJo , Her Godson Nicholas Boalds, her Sister Barbara Muhammad, brother Chester Smalls , a host of Nieces & Nephews, Friends & Colleagues, Coworkers, and her Church family... who she loved dearly! This is a “MAJOR LOST” for us all but at least she’s not suffering anymore!!!
